 The first great demand for corrosion-resistance paints came in the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution for the ship building and construction industries, to protect iron from the elements. As a result, early paint factories were set up in England, Holland and Germany. For many years, Lead based pigments were the most widely used for anticorrosive primers, followed by Chromate-based pigments (Zinc Chromate, Strontium Chromate, Zinc Tetraoxychromate, Barium Chromate, etc). Due to recent toxicological and environmental restrictions, these pigments have been or are being replaced by Zinc Phosphate and its modified versions of higher performance. Current trends point to Zinc- free pigments as products for the next future because of their excellent environmentally-friendly profile. |
